Segments
How to change your metrics over time.
When a new row is created it contains a single formula for the whole row.
Segments represent a change in a row’s formula or value over a period of time. Segments can be added to any type of row in a model and have many different use cases.
Adding a Segment
The most common use of a segment is on an Input Row.

There are a few different ways to add a segment:
- Click the plus button next to the word “Segments” under the formula bar.
- Right click a cell in the row and click “Start Segment”
- Click into a cell in the row and use “ctrl+k” (Windows) or “cmd+k” (Mac)
Once you start building a Segment you will see the following popup:

Segment Types
There are 5 different options when selecting your type of Segment:
- Custom - Allows you to build your formula out however you like.
- Percentage Growth - Grows your metric’s value by a % over an indicated number of months.
- Unit Growth - Grows your metric’s value by a # over an indicated number of months.
- Set Goal - Grows your metric’s value evenly from an indicated starting number to an indicated ending number over the length of the segment.
- One-Time Change - Jumps your metric’s value to an indicated # all at once.
Segment Repeat Options
When selecting the “Repeat” dropdown you will be given 4 options:
- Infinitely - Repeat this segment for the rest of the model.
- Until Segment - Repeat this segment until another segment starts.
- Until Date - Repeat this segment until an indicated End Date.
- Off - Do not repeat this segment, meaning that it will only exist in one month.
Once your Segment has been built it will show up underneath the formula bar when clicked into the row’s main formula. Continue on to the next article to learn more about the Constants that are generated in a Segment.
